Following "the brutal murder attack on a Jewish-Orthodox citizen", the Zurich SVP is demanding answers from the cantonal government "about the perpetrator and his Swiss passport". Security Director Mario Fehr had previously demanded that the federal government expatriate the arrested 15-year-old.

The attack has caused widespread horror and is rightly condemned from all sides, three SVP cantonal councillors state in their question published on Wednesday. It is a temporary low point in a development that has been emerging for some time, they write under the title "imported violence".

They now want to know from the cantonal government where and when the arrested young person was naturalized and whether his integration was checked. They are also asking whether the government sees "potential for optimizing the citizenship procedure so that no violent or extremist individuals are naturalized". According to previous information, the arrested perpetrator, who is 15 years old, was granted Swiss citizenship 13 years ago.

In their question, the three cantonal councillors also want to find out how the perpetrator's Swiss citizenship could be revoked and how any existing hurdles could be removed. This week, Security Director Mario Fehr (non-party), who spoke of an "act of terrorism", had already called for the revocation of citizenship and stricter juvenile criminal law.

Swiss citizenship can only be withdrawn from a dual citizen, as the State Secretariat for Migration states on its website. Their behavior must be "significantly detrimental" to the interests or reputation of Switzerland. Revocation is only conceivable in serious cases - for example in the case of a convicted war criminal or terrorist.

On Saturday evening, a 50-year-old man of the Jewish Orthodox faith was stabbed with a knife by a 15-year-old Swiss man of Tunisian origin in Zurich's district 2. The victim is now out of danger.
