Zurich voters have rejected the "Anti-Chaoten-Initiative". However, they clearly accepted the counter-proposal. In future, demonstration organizers will have to bear the costs of riots.

The SVP's "Anti-Chaoten-Initiative" failed at the ballot box. Only 205,360 voters accepted it. 297,635 rejected the initiative, almost 60 percent. The cantonal council's more moderate counter-proposal, on the other hand, was accepted with 63.8 percent. In the run-off question, which is no longer relevant, the counter-proposal clearly prevailed with 68.4 percent.

In future, demonstrations will always require a permit. Costs for police operations and damage to property can be transferred. However, the organizers would only be asked to pay if the perpetrators acted deliberately. This is in contrast to the initiative, which called for costs to be passed on in all cases.

Voter turnout for the proposals was between 54 and 55.5 percent. All municipalities were in favor of the counter-proposal, even the traditionally left-wing cities of Zurich and Winterthur.

The two bills were opposed by left-wing parties and various NGOs such as Amnesty and Greenpeace. They fear a restriction of the right to demonstrate.
