Tragedy in the Alps: A Reminder of Nature’s Unpredictable Might
A 39-year-old ski tourer had a fatal accident on Monday in the Valais region of Van d’en Haut in the municipality of Salvan. The man from Basel, who lives in Lower Valais, slipped on the ice and fell several meters down a rock face.
The man set off last Sunday on a two-day ski tour from Les Marécottes via the Col de la Galette to the Dents-du-Midi hut, as the Valais cantonal police reported on Tuesday.
On Monday, the ski tourer was heading towards Van d’en Haut. According to the police, on Tuesday, he slipped on an icy passage there – shortly after the so-called “Fontaine à Moise” – for unknown reasons.
The victim was then rescued from seriously injured, received medical treatment on site, and was flown by helicopter to the hospital in Sion. However, the man succumbed to his injuries in the evening.
