Swiss asylum applications witness a 23.4% increase in January, with significant contributions from Afghanistan and Turkey.
2768 people applied for asylum in Switzerland in January. This is 23.4% more than in December. In the month under review, 90 refugees from Ukraine were also granted S protection status, as announced by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) on Monday.
In January 1487, people from Ukraine applied for protection status S. In the case of 47 protection seekers, this was rejected because the criteria were not met. During the month, it was terminated in 57 cases.
The central countries of origin of people who submitted an asylum application in January were Afghanistan with 793 applications, Turkey (501 applications), Algeria (224 applications), Morocco (143 applications) and Eritrea (142 applications).
According to the press release, the SEM processed 2743 asylum applications in January. A total of 732 decisions not to grant asylum were made. 666 people were granted asylum, and 555 were given temporary admission. The number of cases pending in the first instance increased by 88 to 15,655 compared to the previous month.
