The beginning of 2024 sees a downturn in Swiss trade, with exports and imports witnessing declines from the previous month, signaling a cautious start to the year.
Swiss exports experienced a downturn in January, reflecting a cautious start to 2024. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) reported CHF 21.2 billion in exports for the month, a 1.6% seasonally adjusted decline from December 2023. After price adjustments, the real-term decrease was 0.4%, extending the stagnation observed since October 2023.
Imports followed a similar trend but with a sharper fall, landing at CHF 18.4 billion. This represents a 9.3% nominal decrease and a 4.3% real-term drop, primarily influenced by the chemical-pharmaceutical sector and a notable reduction in vehicle imports.
The disparity between the rates of decline in imports versus exports widened the trade balance surplus to CHF 2.8 billion, up from CHF 1.3 billion previously, highlighting a significant shift in trade dynamics at the year’s outset.
