According to a report by the ن زد زد, the federal government wants to prevent the premature shutdown of existing nuclear power plants. The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (BfE) ‘sent a detailed questionnaire to the operators of the Beznau, Leibstadt and Gösgen nuclear power plants‘.
Among other things, the questionnaire seeks to clarify such things as whether or not there is enough fuel and qualified personnel, for the planned operational life span of 60 years.
‘The necessary retrofitting and the monitoring of ageing are important for assessing the security of electricity supply in the coming years and decades‘ a BfE spokesperson informed the NZZ.
Michael Wider, who is Deputy CEO of Alpiq and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Gösgen nuclear power plant, comments to NZZ that “Just a few years ago, such a discussion would have been taboo.“.
Nuclear power continues to account for around 37% of total annual electricity production in Switzerland, rising to around 50% during the winter, and is therefore a vital source of dependable and clean energy in this country.
