Swiss Covid Vaccines strategy faces scrutiny as 18.6 million doses are trashed, surpassing the 17 million administered.
A parliamentary oversight reveals that 18.6 million doses were disposed of, outstripping the 17 million administered. The Control Committee of the National Council (CPC-N) acknowledges this in its latest report but maintains a positive outlook on Switzerland’s vaccine availability.
According to the CPC-N, the Federal Council’s choice to secure excess vaccines has led to a surplus, with an “unavoidable consequence” of waste. This approach ensured Swiss residents received top vaccines without delay.
Since the pandemic’s onset, 17 million Swiss COVID-19 vaccine doses have reached arms, primarily targeting the vulnerable. The federal drive focused on those over 65 with chronic conditions, starting last fall.
Switzerland’s contribution to global health includes donating nearly 8 million doses through Covax and avoiding resale due to low demand. The CPC-N report notes no new orders since early 2023, with plans to scale back and revert to standard procurement by mid-year.
