More than 1400 Zurich residents marched to the exhibition grounds, according to the Olma fairs.

In response to a request from the Keystone-SDA news agency, the St. Gallen city police said that according to an initial estimate, around 15,000 onlookers watched the procession in the city centre on Saturday morning.

The Olma guest canton of Zurich presented itself colourfully and musically. The Zurich originals who took part in the procession included Globi and Böögg, the famous figure from the Zurich Sechseläuten. The Zurich guilds took part in the procession with elaborately designed motifs and distributed flowers, bread, cervelats and mustard, among other things.

Prominent guests from the world of politics included the President of the Zurich Cantonal Government, Mario Fehr (no party affiliation), the President of the St. Gallen Cantonal Government, Stefan Kölliker (SVP) and former Federal Councillor Christoph Blocher (SVP). In addition, numerous folklore groups with roots from different parts of the world presented themselves.

Autumn fair with around 200 stands

The first Saturday of the Swiss Fair for Agriculture and Food in St. Gallen is always dedicated to the guest canton. It presents itself on the exhibition grounds under the motto “Zürcher’s family garden”.

Olma continues until 22 October. In addition to numerous exhibitors, the fair offers various special shows and animal programmes. In the city centre, around 200 market stalls are set up at the St. Gallen Autumn Fair, which is taking place at the same time.
