The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) announced that the 24-hour asylum application procedure, aimed at handling cases from North African countries with minimal chances of approval, has proven highly effective. Implemented initially at the Federal Asylum Center in Zurich, this procedure has led to a substantial 40% drop in applications in the first half of the year.

Since late April, this accelerated procedure has been applied nationwide, addressing applications from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.

Statistics from Zurich reveal a significant 62% decline in applications from these countries since the procedure’s inception in November 2023. Overall, the combined data from all federal asylum centers also show a 40% reduction.

Detailed figures between November and April indicate that out of 413 applications filed in Zurich from these four countries, only 31 were rejected outright, with no grants of asylum.
