Schwyz benefited from higher property gains taxes and interest income on fixed-term deposits. As a result, the state accounts closed CHF 64 million better than budgeted.

As the State Chancellery announced on Thursday, the accounts show a profit of CHF 66 million on income of CHF 1.786 billion and expenses of CHF 1.720 billion. A revenue surplus of CHF 2 million was budgeted.

The State Chancellery put the increase in property gains tax at CHF 21.6 million and the increase in interest income on fixed-term deposits at CHF 14.6 million. Net federal contributions in the asylum system were CHF 8.4 million better than budgeted.

In contrast, tax income from natural persons and, in particular, legal entities normalized in 2023, according to the communication. There had been high growth in these areas in previous years. The canton of Schwyz assumes that it will have to expect lower tax income in the medium term due to the economic outlook.

There were improvements in the government accounts compared to the budget not only on the income side, but also on the expenditure side. For example, personnel costs were CHF 6.8 million lower than budgeted. Savings of CHF 5.5 million were made in hydraulic engineering.
