On Thursday afternoon, a freight train derailed in the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Some of the wagons contained hazardous materials, but none of them leaked. No one was injured. The tunnel will remain closed until next Wednesday. Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) will reroute passenger trains between the German-speaking and Ticino regions via the Gotthard mountain route, which will extend travel times by about an hour and may result in train cancellations. SBB also announced that the Gotthard Base Tunnel will remain closed until at least Wednesday, August 24th. A media conference will be held in Bellinzona on Friday for more information. According to SBB spokesperson Roberta Trevisan, the damage is considerable, but it is too early to assess the cause. She recommends that travelers check for updates before travelling through the Gotthard. Experts are examining the site and assessing possible damage to the track and overhead lines. The Swiss Safety Investigation Board (SUST) has been called in. It is known that several wagons of a freight train heading north derailed at the Faido multifunctional station. In the evening, the cantonal police of Ticino reported that several wagons had derailed, some of which contained hazardous materials. However, these did not leak and posed no danger. No one was injured. Significant damage has been done to the rolling stock and infrastructure.nnnnnnnn
