The Swiss media have commented on the resolution of UBS's loss guarantees, praising the efforts of the federal authorities and UBS for averting the collapse of a globally relevant bank. The cost of the rescue is high, with the CS no longer existing and UBS not taking over its Swiss business. However, the formal removal of federal guarantees is deceptive, as the remaining large bank effectively enjoys an unlimited state guarantee. The "too big to fail" problem must be solved, preferably by UBS itself, by establishing a structure that would allow for a solution in the event of an existential crisis without dragging the entire economy into the abyss.
