Switzerland Offers Assistance to Morocco After Earthquake

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA) has decided to offer Morocco aid following the devastating earthquake that has killed 1037 people. There have been no reports of Swiss victims so far. The Swiss aid will be tailored to the needs of the local population, and the Swiss Embassy in Rabat and the relevant Moroccan authorities are in regular contact. The staff of the embassy are safe. Around two dozen Swiss citizens currently in Morocco have contacted the Swiss Federal Helpline, and 102 Swiss travellers are registered in the Federal TravelAdminApp. 2545 Swiss citizens live in Morocco. Rescue dog organisation Redog will not be sending teams to Morocco until the country requests international help, as the full extent of the earthquake is not yet known and the larger cities have not been affected as severely. However, the organisation is ready to discuss the possibility of sending experts and dogs if large buildings have collapsed and there are many missing people. The international community has expressed its sympathy and support for Morocco. Swiss President Alain Berset expressed solidarity and condolences on Twitter, UN Secretary-General António Guterres offered to support the Moroccan government, EU Council President Charles Michel promised EU support, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his condolences, Pope Francis sent a condolence letter, and US President Joe Biden expressed his deep sorrow. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also offered his support, saying "We stand by our Moroccan brothers and sisters on this difficult day with all means."nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
