Jean-Daniel Ruch will coordinate Swiss security policy in the Defence Department of Viola Amherd from 2024. The current Swiss ambassador to Turkey and former advisor to UN Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte has been appointed as Secretary of State, following his successful application from a pool of 39 candidates (29 men and 10 women). The 60-year-old has a long diplomatic career both at home and abroad, including serving as Special Envoy for the Middle East in the Foreign Ministry and Head of the Peace Policy Section. The new Secretary of State for Security Policy (Sepos) will be responsible for ensuring a coherent security policy of the federal government and strengthening security in Switzerland. He will lead a team of around 100 people and take over tasks from the General Secretariat and other departments in the VBS. He will also represent the Minister of Defence in international forums, analyse the national and international security situation, lead the business offices of the Federal Council's Security Committee and the Core Security Group, and be the contact point for the Swiss Security Network.
