The Energy Electrique du Simplon (EES) company inaugurated its new hydroelectric power plant, "Gabi", in Simplon VS on Saturday. The plant, which was first put into operation in 1957, had been renovated for 37 million francs over the course of a year. It now produces 15% more electricity and can supply 9500 households. With the inauguration of "Gabi", a renovation cycle of three power plants has been completed, according to Amédée Murisier, Chairman of the Board of Directors of EES. The power plant complex south of the Simplon Pass also includes the "Gondo" and "Tannuwald" plants, which were renovated in 2017 and 2020 respectively. The renovation of "Gabi" has increased the total output of the complex by almost 30% since 2017, with an average annual production of 258 million kilowatt hours, equivalent to the average annual electricity consumption of around 55,700 households. The renovation of "Gabi" was carried out in cooperation with environmental organizations, meeting requirements for water protection and renaturation. In addition, a wetland will be created near a compensation basin to compensate for the environmental impacts of the project.
