Tamedia Employees Demonstrate in Lausanne Against Job Cuts

Around 70 employees of Tamedia protested against the planned job cuts in the West Switzerland on Monday in Lausanne. The protest was held outside the Edipresse Tower and included employees from "24 heures", "Tribune de Genève" and the joint editorial team of the West Swiss Tamedia titles, as well as various editorial departments. Signs and banners read "No info without journalists" and "Tamedia always kills your media". The Zurich media group had announced last Wednesday that up to 28 of 247 jobs in the Romandy would be cut this autumn. Several left-wing politicians from the canton of Vaud were present to show their support, including SP National Councilor Pierre-Yves Maillard, President of the Swiss Trade Union Confederation (SGB), and Green Raphaël Mahaim. The demonstrators denounced the "salami tactic" of cuts by the TX Group. Some employees then entered the building to begin the first round of negotiations with the publisher. The talks are scheduled until October 8th. In the German-speaking part of Switzerland, Tamedia is also cutting jobs, but to a lesser extent. Up to 20 positions are to be eliminated there. Of the total savings package of six million francs, 3.5 million francs are to be borne by the Romandy.
