Bad news for households already struggling with inflation: this was the announcement made by Health Minister and Federal President Alain Berset on Tuesday. For the last time in his career, he announced an increase in health insurance premiums of 8.7% in 2024. At the same time, he referred to the cost-saving measures initiated by the Federal Council in the health sector, such as the promotion of generics and biosimilars, which the government expects to save 250 million francs a year. The Swiss health system is good, but it comes at a price. Insured persons are not simply at the mercy of premium increases. Cost-saving measures have already been taken and will continue to be taken. However, there is resistance to these efforts. Berset referred to the failed new pricing system for medicines that was rejected by Parliament after three years. Other attempts at savings have been greatly watered down by the Federal Council. In view of the large premium increase in 2024, more energetic measures are needed. The premium increase in 2024 is characterized by three elements: the cost increase in the health sector, the costs not covered by the premiums and the losses of the health insurance companies.
