Switzerland is providing an additional five million francs to support Sudan, its neighbor South Sudan, and Chad. The ongoing conflict has severely worsened the already precarious humanitarian situation. More than 5.3 million people have been displaced, with over one million of them fleeing to neighboring countries. The fighting has spread from the capital Khartum to other areas since April 15th, the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA) announced on Wednesday. To meet the increased humanitarian needs, Switzerland is supporting the non-governmental organization Norwegian Refugee Council in Sudan with 500,000 Swiss francs. One million Swiss francs have been donated to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA). This donation will be used to fund projects from local and international non-governmental organizations as well as UN organizations, despite the conflict in the country. In South Sudan, one million Swiss francs are allocated to the United Nations World Food Programme and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). In Chad, 1.5 million Swiss francs are allocated to various United Nations organizations. The Swiss government has contributed over 45 million Swiss Francs to date to help manage the crisis in Sudan and its neighboring countries. Switzerland continues to monitor the situation in order to adjust its support to new needs. In addition to South Sudan and Chad, Egypt is also a destination for people fleeing from Sudan.
