German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider spoke on the phone on Monday. The two politicians discussed Germany’s announced border controls at the Swiss border.
Federal Councillor Baume-Schneider reminded her counterpart of the close ties between the border regions, the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) wrote on Monday evening in response to a request from the Keystone-SDA news agency.
In the telephone conversation, Interior Minister Faeser “assured her counterpart that border traffic would be affected as little as possible”, it added.
The two ministers had reaffirmed their will to continue the constructive and successful cooperation against secondary migration and smuggling.
Due to the current situation, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCS) decided back in September to send staff from German-speaking Switzerland to the border with Italy to provide support, according to the SEM. “Switzerland is closely monitoring the migration situation and reserves the right to take further measures.”
