The Zurich State Prosecutor has opened several proceedings against 15 people involved in a mass brawl between Eritreans in Opfikon in September. The investigation is looking into charges of affray and breach of the peace, and whether any other offences have been committed. All suspects are currently on bail. The canton is also considering revoking the residence permits of those involved in the brawl. The police had no prior knowledge of the meeting in Zurich, which was apparently organised spontaneously after a meeting in St. Gallen was cancelled. Despite the brawl and other incidents, the Zurich government has not seen an increase in violence, with 134 cases involving Eritreans since 2009, and double-digit cases each year since 2015. To combat the violence, the canton police have increased patrols at Zurich's main train station and are in contact with representatives of the Eritrean diaspora and event venue operators.
