The Jura Returns to the National Council

In the canton of Jura, a political earthquake occurred on Sunday. The Swiss People's Party (SVP) ousted the centre from the National Council. The Jura will now be represented in the National Council by the incumbent Pierre-Alain Fridez (SP) and the newly elected SVP politician Thomas Stettler. The alliance between the FDP and SVP worked perfectly to the detriment of the centre, which could not hold onto the seat vacated by the former incumbent Jean-Paul Gschwind. This result is reminiscent of the election of Dominique Baettig (SVP) to the National Council in 2007, which was also made possible by the alliance with the FDP. The return of the SVP to the National Council was a surprise, but the party's current topics convinced many Jurassians and Stettler, former president of the SVP Jura and former farmer from Courroux, ran an active campaign locally. Fridez, who had been granted an exception for a fourth term, was re-elected with 6665 votes. Stettler received 4380 votes. The centre narrowly missed the second place. The turnout was 43.6%.
