The logic of the FDP and SVP speaks in favor of a second federal council seat for his party, according to Mitte President Gerhard Pfister. “We will remind these parties of their own logic on occasion,” Pfister said in an interview.

The logic of the two parties is that the three parties with the most votes should get two seats in the Federal Council, Pfister said in an interview with CH Media published Tuesday. He added that it did not matter how big the gap was between them and between them and the fourth strongest party.

Pfister did not directly express ambitions for a second seat in the Federal Council for his party. It is natural for a party to want influence for its ideas, he said in response to a question. “In Switzerland, you get that in the Federal Council, among other places,” Pfister said.

Center overtakes FDP

He said the center is sticking to not voting out incumbent federal councilors. If an FDP Federal Council member resigns, it will be exciting, Pfister said. “If the Free Democrats follow their previous argumentation, they would have to give up one seat.”

The party president said the center would only lay claim to a seat if legitimacy was given by the voters. The center overtook the FDP in Sunday’s National Council elections. With 29 seats, it is the third strongest party in the National Council after the SVP and SP. The FDP secured 28 seats in the large chamber.
