In an open letter, the Catholic youth association Jungwacht Blauring (Jubla) calls for a "complete clarification" and an external investigation into the cases of abuse in the Catholic Church. Those responsible must also be held accountable.

The structures in the Catholic Church have facilitated abuse and its cover-up, Jubla Managing Director Andrea Pfäffli was quoted as saying in a press release on Friday. Changes and a modernization of the church are therefore urgently needed.

The protection of young people is a top priority for Jubla. Tens of thousands of parents and guardians entrust their children to Jubla and rely on professional supervision. But while Jubla is constantly developing its protective measures, the Catholic Church is doing far too little.

Jubla has therefore written an open letter to the Swiss Bishops' Conference. In it, it formulates numerous demands to the church leadership. For example, all cases of abuse over the last 40 years should be investigated externally and the perpetrators banned from their profession. An internal investigation is insufficient.

In addition, the Swiss bishops should lobby Rome for the ordination of women. And the Catholic Church should accept all forms of relationships and make marriage possible - even for queer people. However, the chosen form of relationship of church personnel must remain a private matter

Jubla also criticizes the "ecclesiastical culture of fear". This is because employees are afraid of sanctions if their private lives do not conform to the church's ideal. Furthermore, more democratic structures are needed in the Catholic Church instead of a "male monarchy". And the youth associations need to be more involved in prevention work.

With 33,000 members, Jungwacht Blauring claims to be the largest Catholic children's and youth organization in Switzerland.
