In his welcoming speech for French President Emmanuel Macron, President Alain Berset emphasized the similarities between the two countries. Switzerland is often alone. "But we are not isolated because we have France."

Sometimes there are also difficult phases, said Berset on Wednesday in the lobby of the Federal Palace. However, there are cordial disputes. Berset was probably alluding to the rather difficult diplomatic phase in recent years. When Switzerland decided against the French fighter jets, Paris reacted angrily.

In his speech, which lasted over five minutes, Berset cited numerous artists and thought leaders who connect the two countries. "What connects us is a broad culture, a common language," said Berset.

In his speech, the President of the Swiss Confederation also emphasized the long historical relationship between Switzerland and France. Both countries are modern states.

Berset also referred to the current geopolitical challenges. The world has been weakened by the pandemic and is now bleeding due to the brutal war in Ukraine and rising anti-Semitism. "But there are political solutions." Switzerland is ready for dialog and promotes peace.

Berset concluded his speech with the words: "Dear French friends, you will always be welcome in Switzerland."
