The Federal Council wants to continue the existing measures against female genital mutilation. An evaluation has shown that the current focus of the measures is correct, the Federal Council announced on Wednesday. However, there is still a need for action.

This was the conclusion of an external evaluation, according to the Federal Council. Without a national competence center that pools knowledge and ensures quality and networking, the sustainability of the efforts and development work to date would be called into question. The Federal Council therefore continues to support the network against female genital mutilation, it wrote.

The Swiss Network against Female Genital Mutilation has been operating as a national competence center since 2016. With the support of the federal government, it advises and informs specialists and those affected, trains and raises awareness among healthcare professionals and carries out prevention work in affected migrant communities.

There are an estimated 24,600 women and girls living in Switzerland who are affected by genital mutilation or are at risk of being circumcised. Female genital mutilation has been a criminal offense in Switzerland since 2012.
