The validation of educational achievements and qualification opportunities for adults without a vocational qualification currently only exists in 15 basic vocational training courses. Nevertheless, the Federal Council does not currently see any need for additional action.

At its meeting on Wednesday, the Federal Council adopted a postulate report on the validation of educational achievements and qualification opportunities for adults without professional qualifications. The current offers for validation and credit transfer procedures have proven their worth, according to a statement from the Federal Council.

The report states that adults have various options for obtaining a vocational qualification, depending on their individual requirements. The majority of the approximately 10,600 professional qualifications obtained by adults each year are obtained in the traditional way via a qualification procedure with a final examination. Only a small proportion of qualifications, around 650 per year, are obtained through the validation of educational achievements.

The validation procedure is a qualification procedure specially developed for adults with professional experience. Candidates do not take a final examination, but instead submit a dossier to prove that they have the skills required for a profession and the general education requirements.

Low distribution

There are around 250 basic vocational training courses to choose from in Switzerland. The recognition of educational achievements is generally possible in all VET programs. However, validation procedures are not widespread.

According to the report, the validation process has been able to establish itself in the healthcare, social services and commercial sectors. Every year, around 600 qualifications are counted in these professional areas.

The validation procedure is currently offered in the cantons of Geneva, Zurich, Bern, Vaud, Fribourg, Jura, Neuchâtel, Valais and Zug. The canton of Geneva issues more than half of all federal certificates of proficiency and professional certificates issued via the validation procedure.
