Airbnb wants to expand its presence in Switzerland. "The number of hosts in this country has skyrocketed by 30 percent between 2021 and 2022, all without any targeted initiatives for this market," said Emmanuel Marill, head of the Europe, Africa and Middle East region, to the news agency AWP.
There are now 25,000 hosts throughout Switzerland who offer a room or complete accommodation on the platform, which was founded in the USA in 2008. That's around 30 percent more than in 2021.
Compared to more mature markets such as France, Spain or Italy, their numbers may seem relatively small. "However, we have only achieved this growth organically, through word of mouth," said Marill. The increased interest in the platform is also reflected in demand, as search queries from Swiss internet users rose by 50 percent in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the previous year.
Airbnb is headquartered in San Francisco, California. In 2022, the Group recorded a turnover of 8.4 billion US dollars (7.4 billion Swiss francs) and a net profit of 1.9 billion US dollars.
