The regional broadcaster Radio Fribourg has to cut six jobs for economic reasons. Cost-cutting measures are unavoidable in order to ensure the continued existence of the company, according to a press release issued on Friday.
The coming year is likely to be another difficult one for the media sector, writes the radio station with a view to the coming months. The cost-cutting measures are primarily the result of a sharp decline in national advertising revenue. Almost CHF 500,000 in revenue has been lost here since 2020.
The Board of Directors and Executive Board regretted the job cuts on Wednesday, which correspond to a total of 4.8 full-time equivalents. Accompanying measures have been introduced to support those affected. According to the Radio Fribourg website, the station currently employs 44 people.
Management criticizes canton
However, the management also criticizes the canton. The Fribourg State Council has "twice refused to provide support". This is despite the fact that the constitution stipulates that the state should promote bilingualism.
Radio Fribourg also points out that the state is demanding the repayment of 138,000 francs that were granted as part of the Covid measures. Proceedings in this regard are pending before the cantonal court, wrote Radio Fribourg.
Radio Fribourg/Fribourg went on air in 1988 with a French and a German program. At the beginning of the noughties, the station experienced financial difficulties. A fundraising campaign among listeners helped to ensure its survival.
In 2019, the station moved to new premises in the Mediaparc in Villars-sur-Glâne. There, the broadcaster is united with La Télé Vaud-Fribourg, Sept.ch and skippr GmbH under one roof.
