In Valais, almost a third of the planned wolf kills have already been made in the first week of hunting. Gamekeepers and hunters have shot ten wolves since December 1st. The mountain canton wants to eliminate a total of seven packs, just over 30 predators.
Five more animals have been shot since Thursday. This is shown on the canton's website, where the animals killed are listed. According to the list, three of the animals shot belonged to the pack in the Val d'Hérens. One adult wolf was shot by a hunter with a permit, two cubs by gamekeepers.
In addition, gamekeepers killed a young wolf from the Nanz pack and another from the Augstbord pack. Five other specimens, including an adult animal, had already been killed between December 1 and 5.
The hunt for the more than 20 wolves still to be shot in Valais will continue until the end of January 2024. At the presentation of the regulatory measures in mid-November, the canton spoke of a "difficult undertaking" to achieve the shooting target within this period.
He estimated that the operation would be a "great success" if "between 10 and 15" wolves could be eliminated within two months. To support him in his task, the canton deployed hunters who had to undergo special training.
The new hunting ordinance allows wolves in Switzerland to be shot preventively before they have caused any damage. At the end of November, the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) approved applications from five cantons for the shooting of a total of twelve wolf packs.
