The accused in the Jestetten (D) murder case answered initial questions about himself in court in Waldshut (D) on Monday. It is unclear whether he will testify about the crime itself.
The public prosecutor charged the 39-year-old Latvian with manslaughter. They accuse him of killing a 31-year-old Swiss man on the Rhine near Jestetten on the evening of June 8 this year. He is alleged to have beaten the man to death with a log.
The victim was found the next day lying on his stomach by the Rhine with his pants down. It is not known why the crime was committed. According to the public prosecutor, the accused has not yet provided any details. If he remains silent, the court will have to judge on the basis of the evidence.
The 39-year-old was initially questioned about his identity. He had already come into conflict with the law in Latvia and was convicted of a homicide in 2005. In prison, he was married in the meantime. "But the marriage only lasted 48 hours."
