On Wednesday, the Basel Grand Council acknowledged the election of Beat Jans (SP), President of the Cantonal Government of Basel, to the Federal Council with resounding applause. Grand Council President Bülent Pekerman (GLP) spoke of a historic day for the canton of Basel-Stadt.

To celebrate the election, the town hall bell was rung for 15 minutes, said Pekerman.

He pointed out that this had last been the case in December 1959, when Hans-Peter Tschudi was the last person from Basel to be elected to the Federal Council.

Election to replace Jans on March 3

The people of Basel will decide on Jans' successor in March. As the government announced at the end of November, the election to replace Jans on the Basel executive and the presidency of the government has been set for March 3, 2024.

A possible second ballot would take place on Sunday, April 7. The new member of the cantonal government will take office on May 1, 2024.
