On Friday, the Zurich District Court sentenced a 39-year-old man to 10 years and 20 days in prison for intentional homicide and other offenses. In March 2022, he had beaten up a 58-year-old man in Zurich-Altstetten to such an extent that he died from his injuries.
The court also ordered that the Iranian, who has lived in Switzerland since he was a small child, be banned from the country for twelve years. The ban is to apply to the entire Schengen area. He must undergo outpatient therapy while serving his sentence.
For one of the secondary offenses, a minor fraud, he has to pay a fine of 300 francs. And he will incur high costs as a result of the proceedings. The verdict is not yet final. It can be appealed to the High Court of the Canton of Zurich. The accused is already serving an early sentence.
According to the court, the defendant did not act with direct intent to kill, but he had accepted the fatal consequences of his blows, the presiding judge said in the oral reasons for the verdict.
The accused had hit his friend with a wooden club and his fists. The Swiss man suffered broken bones and severe head and brain injuries. These led to his death in hospital six days after the attack.
