Zurich SP Councillor of States Daniel Jositsch does not believe that his relationship with his party has been shattered following his wild candidacy for the Federal Council. "I am a member of the Social Democratic Party; at the moment I see no reason to change that," he said.
In Wednesday's Federal Council election, he did not declare his resignation because he did not receive enough votes for an absolute majority. "But it was also a matter of principle. This ticket doctrine goes too far," said Jositsch in an interview with the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" published on Saturday.
"If I had stood up on Wednesday and said that I would give up the office of Federal Councillor if elected, it would have become dogma," Jositsch continued, referring to the parliamentary groups' Federal Council ticket. "However, the freedom of the Federal Assembly must remain guaranteed." The Council of States member from Zurich was convinced that the ticket discussion would be conducted differently at the next Federal Council election.
The office of Federal Councillor would have appealed to him, said Jositsch. "But to be honest, I'm pretty relaxed. Maybe it's just as well I didn't become a Federal Councillor." And yet: "If Beat Jans were to step down tomorrow, I would run again. But I'm not expecting that."
No longer SP Group Leader
Jositsch was previously also group leader of the SP representatives in the Council of States. This role will now be taken over by his Council and party colleague Flavia Wasserfallen. The Bernese member of the Council of States confirmed a corresponding report by CH Media on Saturday.
According to Wasserfallen, there is no connection to Wednesday's Federal Council election. She told the Keystone-SDA news agency that Jositsch had already announced his intention to resign before the SP parliamentary group decided on the ticket for Alain Berset's successor. Jositsch himself could not initially be reached for comment.
