In future, Rhine ships will no longer be allowed to discharge gaseous pollutants into this river, apart from solid and liquid waste. The Swiss parliament has given the Federal Council the green light for Switzerland to ratify the corresponding extension to an international agreement.
After the Council of States, the National Council also approved the corresponding federal decree on Monday. The Convention on the collection, deposit and reception of waste produced during navigation on the Rhine and inland waterways (CDNI) will be amended. In addition to Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands are parties to the CDNI.
The National Council also said yes to Switzerland's accession to the new Strasbourg Convention of 2012 on the Limitation of Liability in Inland Navigation (CLNI 2012). According to the Federal Council, Switzerland is participating in the modernization and standardization of the limitation of liability on European inland waterways with this accession.
The National Council clearly approved the two federal resolutions on the two agreements, each with around 40 votes against from the SVP parliamentary group. The two federal resolutions still have to survive the final votes in the Federal Assembly at the end of the winter session.
