Parliament does not want an aviation tax for private jets and business aircraft. The National Council voted 108 to 87, with 3 abstentions, against a proposal by the majority of its Committee for the Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy (Urek-N).

A minority led by Matthias Samuel Jauslin (FDP/AG) prevailed on this point on Wednesday. A proposal for a private jet tax had already failed in the Council of States in the fall. A minority had proposed it there.

The Urek-N had proposed a levy for private jets weighing 5.7 tons or more. This would have amounted to between CHF 500 and CHF 3000 per flight departing from Switzerland. However, the FDP, SVP and GLP and individual members of the Center Group voted against the levy.

The Federal Council had wanted to do without new levies in the new version of the revised CO2 Act. The conservatives and Environment Minister Albert Rösti repeatedly reminded us of this promise.

Martin Bäumle (GLP/ZH) pointed out that the tax has no steering effect. Either it is paid or a different departure airport is chosen. The industry is prepared to voluntarily do more than is required by EU law.

The SP, the Center Party and the Greens would have wanted the levy that the majority of the Urek-N had proposed - still in the line-up from before the national elections. They wanted to use the revenue from the levy for climate protection measures and include a sector with very high CO2 emissions in the legal provisions.
