Some of the staff of the ground handling company Dnata will go on strike at Geneva Airport from 04:00 on Sunday. This was announced by the public service union (VPOD) on Saturday evening.
Dnata is responsible for part of the ground handling at Geneva Airport. "The time has come for the Dnata workforce to fight", announced the public service union (VPOD). The management's threats have had the opposite effect. The further course of the strike will be decided in the course of the strike meetings, it said.
The impact of the announced strike on passengers was still unclear at the time of the announcement. The airport will inform passengers, a spokesperson for Geneva Airport told the Keystone-SDA news agency. For Sunday, the airport is expecting fewer passengers than in recent days, the spokesperson said, without giving specific figures.
More pay and bonuses
The union had already threatened to strike at the beginning of the week. No agreement was reached between the management and the union before the arbitration chamber in Geneva, a union spokesperson told Keystone-SDA late on Friday evening.
The workforce rejected the management's proposals by a large majority. Accordingly, the company wants to increase wages by 3 percent. The union had demanded a 5 percent pay rise and bonuses depending on the severity of the work.
Dnata employs around 600 people at Geneva Airport. Among other things, they issue tickets and transport passengers and baggage on the ground. The company works for airlines such as Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Iberia, Air Lingus and, in some cases, Easyjet.
