On Sunday, the Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) received no indications of concrete planned attacks in Switzerland. However, the threat of terrorism in Switzerland remains high, as the FIS announced at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.
Against the backdrop of possible attack plans, the German authorities stepped up security measures around Cologne Cathedral. Tighter security measures are also in place in Vienna on Christmas Eve.
According to the FIS on Sunday, Switzerland's assessment of the terrorist threat has not changed. Switzerland belongs to the western world, which jihadists consider to be hostile to Islam, and is therefore a legitimate target for terrorist attacks from their point of view. The FIS did not comment on the specific cantons, regions or cities in Switzerland affected.
According to the FIS, however, other states are more exposed than Switzerland, especially those that are militarily involved in international coalitions against the "Islamic State" or are perceived as particularly Islamophobic by jihadist-inspired individuals.
Threat of extremism
The most plausible terror scenario for Switzerland is currently a jihadist act of violence perpetrated by a jihadist-inspired individual. According to the FIS, this attack would be directed against weakly protected targets such as crowds of people and would require limited logistical and organizational resources.
In addition, the attack by Hamas on Israel and the war in the Middle East could also affect the security of Jewish and Israeli interests in Switzerland, the FIS added. Jewish and Muslim institutions have already been exposed to an increased threat of terrorism and violent extremism for several years.
