The Swiss Fishing Association SFV has named the Marmorata trout as Fish of the Year 2024. According to the association, this trout is an ambassador for the unique fish diversity of the southern side of the Alps, but is endangered.
The fish, which can grow up to one meter long, has shaped the waters of Ticino, Bregaglia and Poschiavo for thousands of years, according to an SFV press release on Tuesday. Due to its perfect camouflage and dominance, the Marmorata trout has long held an unchallenged position in the waters of southern Switzerland.
Now, however, it is paying the price for the incorrect stocking practices of previous decades and is being hindered in its reproduction by power plants that are not fishable. By incorrect stocking practices, the SFV means that Rhine trout were introduced into the waters where the Marmorata trout is native. Many of the Marmorata trout are therefore no longer genetically pure.
It is alarming when hardly anyone discovers a Marmorata trout today, the press release continues.
To save the Marmorata trout, a project similar to that for the almost extinct fish "Roi du Doubs" in the Swiss-French river of the same name is now being examined. The "MarmoGen" project of the South Tyrolean Fishing Association serves as a model.
