Councillor Alex Hürzeler (SVP) will not be standing for re-election in the Aargau cantonal elections on October 20, 2024. The four other current councillors will run again.

He is not stepping down, Hürzeler emphasized to the media in Aarau on Wednesday: "I will continue my work until 31 December". The 58-year-old said that he had "always enjoyed" his work in the Department of Education, Culture and Sport, even though it was demanding.

"16 years is enough," said the SVP representative. After four terms of office, it is time to make way for a successor. The other four Aargau councillors are seeking re-election for the 2025 to 2028 term of office.

For 56-year-old Landammann and Finance Director Markus Dieth (center), this would be his third term of office from 2025. The 56-year-old Director of Construction Stephan Attiger (FDP), who has been in office since 2013 and is therefore the longest-serving member of the cantonal government, is also standing for re-election, as is Hürzeler's party colleague Jean-Pierre Gallati (SVP), who has been in office for five years as Head of the Department of Health and Social Affairs and is 57 years old.

State Governor and Director of Economic Affairs Dieter Egli (SP) also wants to run again. The youngest member of the Aargau government in terms of term of office and age is 53 years old and has been in office since 2020.
