The Greens are recommending that the initiative for a 13th AHV pension be accepted. However, at their delegates' meeting in Lucerne on Saturday, they voted against the Young Liberals' pension initiative.

The people and cantons will decide on the two popular initiatives on March 3. The two slogans were adopted without dissenting votes, as the party announced on Saturday.

According to the press release, the delegates also unanimously spoke out against the expansion of highways. "More roads only mean one thing: more traffic," the party wrote on X. The Greens are thus supporting the referendum against the freeway expansion passed by parliament last fall. The vote on this bill will take place this year.

Energy and media

The delegates also voted in favor of the Electricity Act. "The law is central to the energy transition and in particular promotes rooftop solar power and electricity efficiency, i.e. the two best solutions for nature and the environment," Zurich National Councillor Bastien Girod was quoted as saying in the press release.

The Greens also passed a resolution to promote media diversity. The pressure on journalism is constantly increasing, they wrote. A reduction in fees for radio and television would increase this pressure instead of strengthening media diversity. In their resolution, the Greens call on the Federal Council to refrain from reducing the SRG by ordinance and to discuss strengthening the SRG.

Outgoing president is combative

The outgoing President of the Greens, Balthasar Glättli, was combative at the last delegates' meeting under his leadership. "Let's remain courageous. Let's stick together", he said according to the press release. The Greens are needed now more than ever, and all together, said Glättli. "With 2023, the hottest year is behind us," he said. And the next hottest year has probably begun.

Glättli painted a bleak picture of the current global situation. Not only the climate and nature are in crisis, "wars and conflicts are shaping the everyday lives of countless people". Glättli is also concerned that far-right parties are gaining strength in many places. He emphasized the responsibility of the Greens: "With the second-best result in our history, we are the second-largest Green parliamentary group."

The party is the alternative to technical megalomania with an environmental policy that respects nature and its limits. The outgoing President emphasized the successes of the last legislative period, including the drafting of the Climate Protection Act and the fight for a modern sexual criminal law.
