According to an initial estimate, the Swiss hotel industry once again accommodated more guests in December. This means that local hotels are likely to have achieved a new guest record in 2023.

In December, hotel overnight stays rose by 4.3% compared to the same month last year, according to provisional figures released by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Tuesday. The increase is due in particular to foreign guests. Here, overnight stays increased by 6.4 percent. However, Swiss guests also recorded a 2.1 percent increase.

New record

This means that the number of overnight stays in 2023 was higher in every month of the year than in the previous year. From January to November, the total number of overnight stays was already 38.5 million, 9.0% more than in 2022. However, this also represents an increase of 4.5% for the first eleven months compared to the previous record year of 2019.

Given that December is traditionally a very strong month for the hotel industry, the previous guest record is likely to have fallen. It was also probably the first time that the number of overnight stays exceeded 40 million in one year.

The Swiss hotel industry benefited from the fact that significantly more guests came from abroad once the coronavirus measures were lifted. The fact that more Swiss people traveled abroad again than during the pandemic is therefore likely to have more than compensated for this.

However, the definitive and absolute figures for December and for 2023 as a whole will not be published by the FSO until February 22.
