Following the revelations in France, Nestlé has admitted that it also used unauthorized filtration processes for Henniez mineral water in Switzerland. These unauthorized protective measures in its Vaud factory were discontinued at the end of 2022, the multinational company assures.

"As a mineral water producer, Nestlé Waters must constantly adapt its operations, practices and sites to changes in the environment around its sources. These adaptation efforts, which have always been aimed at ensuring food safety, have led the company to introduce protective measures that do not comply with the legal framework for mineral water in Switzerland," a Nestlé Waters spokeswoman told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Thursday. She was confirming a report in the newspaper "Le Temps".

Under the supervision of the cantonal and federal authorities, Nestlé Waters Switzerland removed the activated carbon filters at its factory in Henniez VD at the end of 2022. Furthermore, ultraviolet systems have never been used in the factory in Henniez.

The company announced on Monday that it had informed the French authorities in 2021 that it had carried out banned treatments with ultraviolet light and activated carbon filters on some of its mineral water products.

The brands concerned, Perrier, Vittel, Hépar and Contrex, are now "fully compliant with the legal framework in force in France", the world market leader for mineral water told the AFP news agency. Over the past three years, Nestlé has refrained from using prohibited treatments.

The regulations resulting from an EU directive prohibit the disinfection of mineral water, which by nature must be of high microbiological quality, in contrast to tap water, which is disinfected before it is drinkable. The interpretation of these regulations excludes UV treatments and activated carbon filters.
