1252 people claimed exit euthanasia last year

Last year, 1252 members of the Exit German Switzerland association made use of assisted suicide. This means that eleven percent more people opted for assisted suicide than in 2022. The euthanasia organization also has almost 20,000 new members.
At the end of last year, the Exit German Switzerland association had 167,631 members, the Exit German Switzerland association announced on Thursday. That is 19,679 more people than in the previous year. In addition to assisted death, 92,000 members had also made use of the opportunity to make a living will.
The reason for the increase in assisted suicide is, among other things, the ageing society and the resulting severely limiting illnesses or disabilities. The average age of the assisted suicide victims was 80.7 years for women and 79 years for men.
According to the report, 31 percent of those who died had terminal cancer, which corresponds to 392 assisted deaths. An increasing number of elderly people with multiple complaints also opted for self-determined death. As in the previous year, more women (759) than men (493) chose to be accompanied to their death.
According to Exit, three quarters of assisted suicides took place in private homes, and just under a fifth of assisted suicides took place in retirement and nursing homes.
