Föhn ensures gale-force winds and mild temperatures

An area of low pressure over the southwest of England brought heavy foehn winds to Switzerland on Saturday. According to SRF Meteo, a gust with a wind speed of 138 kilometers per hour was measured on the Gütsch above Andermatt in the canton of Uri. Meanwhile, temperatures in the Föhn valleys rose to more than 17 degrees.
On Friday evening, foehn gusts of more than 100 kilometers per hour were already registered on the mountains, the weather desk of Swiss radio and television wrote on Saturday. In the valleys, the peak values were a good 80 kilometers per hour.
After temporarily weakening somewhat, the Föhn reached its maximum on Saturday afternoon, according to SRF Meteo. The wind on the Jungfraujoch in the Bernese Oberland was almost as strong as on the Gütsch near Andermatt - at 137 kilometers per hour.
Towards midday, temperatures also rose in the Föhntal valleys. Meteorologists recorded 17.5 degrees in Altdorf UR and 17.4 degrees in Sevelen in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley. There were 16 degrees each in Evionnaz VS, Glarus and Bad Ragaz SG. In St. Gallen, the thermometer climbed to 15 degrees.
