The lawyer for the former Thurgau cantonal veterinarian accused in the Hefenhofen TG animal welfare case has presented his client as a victim in court. The defendant is being blamed for an entire state failure.
The third day of the trial in the Hefenhofen animal welfare case began at the Frauenfeld TG district court with the plea of the defense lawyer of the former head of the veterinary office. According to the lawyer, he had to answer for the failure of numerous official bodies that were overburdened with a notorious troublemaker.
In 2017, images of emaciated and dead horses on a farm in Hefenhofen shocked the public. The authorities later cleared the farm.
The public prosecutor demanded a conditional prison sentence of 18 months against the then cantonal veterinarian. He is said to have been inactive for too long. He is accused of multiple counts of abuse of office, favoritism by omission, cruelty to animals by omission, damage to creditors and fraudulent mismanagement.
