Suisseculture, the umbrella organization of cultural organizations, has expressed its "dismay" at the Federal Council's proposed cuts to the cultural budget. These are "an imposition for the Swiss cultural sector".

At 0.3 percent, the proportion of the federal government's total budget spent on culture is already very low and disproportionate to the social importance of culture, Suisseculture announced on Friday. Many people pursue cultural activities in their free time and are involved in associations.

The cultural sector is also an important economic and location factor. Festivals, museums and architectural monuments are important for Switzerland as a tourist destination and generate overnight stays and spending in restaurants and stores.

In its statement on the cultural message, the cultural sector had therefore already pointed out that the original funding proposal would not be sufficient to offset inflation and meet the challenges ahead.

During the preparation of the cultural message, further tasks were added to the existing ones. For Suisseculture, it is therefore incomprehensible that the Federal Council wants to cut the already low cultural budget by a further 14 million by 2028.
