Swiss Rhine ports (SRH) report an 8% increase in goods handling in 2023, driven by a significant rise in mineral oil products stockpiling.
The Swiss Rhine ports (SRH) handled more goods in 2023. This was mainly due to the build-up of stocks of mineral oil products.
However, with 4.97 million tons of goods in 2023, the five million ton mark was narrowly missed, according to a press release on Tuesday. Compared to the previous year, however, this corresponds to an increase of a good 8%.
Nevertheless, the result is below expectations, partly because the increase in throughput was 20%after the first nine months. In the last quarter of 2023, however, a persistent period of low water followed by flooding prevented a better result, according to the statement.
According to the information provided, the container sector in particular suffered last year. However, the handling of construction materials, vehicles and machinery also decreased due to the unfavourable global economic developments.
At the same time, however, the sharp rise in imports of petroleum products more than compensated for the decline. The high imports of the raw material were due to the fact that stocks were replenished following the difficult situation on the energy markets in 2022.
