In an initial reaction to the adoption of the negotiating mandate, the Conference of Cantonal Governments (KdK) emphasized that it attaches great importance to a good exchange with the EU and its member states. In addition, it is essential that access to the Horizon and Erasmus research and education programs is restored.

These programs are of central importance for the economy and renowned competence centers such as ETH Zurich, EPFL and the Paul Scherrer Institute, they wrote on Friday. For the cantons, whose industrial and technology companies are dependent on exports, it is important that Switzerland can quickly stabilize the agreements and put them on a permanent footing.

The cantons would monitor the negotiation process and then assess whether the results were satisfactory. The cantons wanted to comment on the question of whether a mandatory referendum with a double majority should be necessary once the outcome of the negotiations had been announced.
