The reason for the crash of an airplane in Grenchen SO in February is probably a parachute that opened unintentionally. This is the conclusion of the preliminary report published on Tuesday by the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (STSB).

The pilot died in the crash of the transport plane belonging to the "Skydive Grenchen" association on February 18. He was alone on board at the time of the accident, after eleven people had previously parachuted out, as was announced shortly after the crash.

One of the parachutists had an "unintentional opening of the reserve parachute" while he was still on board, writes the STSB in its preliminary report. The parachutist subsequently collided with the tailplane, causing it to be completely torn off the aircraft.

The plane then crashed. The pilot himself was not wearing a rescue parachute. One parachutist was slightly injured. The aircraft was destroyed.
