Russians in Switzerland can also take part in the presidential election next weekend, in which incumbent Vladimir Putin is seeking re-election. The condition is that they have Russian citizenship, are at least 18 years old and have a valid Russian passport.
All Russian citizens over the age of 18 who are resident or temporarily staying in Switzerland have the right to vote in the election of the President of the Russian Federation, the Russian embassy in Bern told Keystone-SDA news agency.
Russian citizens must have a valid Russian passport in order to vote. According to the embassy, around 16,200 Russians live in Switzerland.
In accordance with Russian electoral legislation, voters in foreign polling stations will be registered on the electoral rolls directly on election day upon their personal verbal request. The elections will take place next Sunday in two polling stations from 08:00 to 20:00: in Bern at the Russian Embassy and in Geneva at the Russian Permanent Mission.
It is difficult to estimate how many Russians who are entitled to vote will actually take part in the elections, which are considered undemocratic. After all, exiled Russian dissident associations, opponents of President Vladimir Putin and fundamental opponents of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine have called for a boycott of the elections - and want to be present in Bern and Geneva on Sunday.
